Yay, not made of fail!

Hooray, no more unemployment! I had an interview on Wednesday, but I totally bombed that. Thankfully the employment agency came to the recuse and lined up another job interview. I was super caught off guard though. They phoned me around 8:30 am this morning, saying the new company wanted to have a chat with me. And so followed a mad rush to find the company - it's in the middle of an industrial park but not a bad bus ride - eat breakfast, get cleaned up, and then get out of the house. It's a small company, but the people seem real nice and I'll be working on their documents, formatting, proofreading, editing, etc. Though, being the lame person that I am, I forgot to ask about benefits and pay. Whoops.

I don't start until the 26th so I have one more day to enjoy unemployment before I'm gone for a week in San Francisco. I have to admit I'm sort of glad I bombed the other one. The other job sounded so boring and structured. And this new company has a cool name. Ghostpine.

In other exciting news that isn't about job hunting, the first photos from Dollhouse have been released! This first one is of Echo in the Dollhouse, which looks like a pretty set. It looks like a cross between a Zen garden and the Angel Wolfram and Hart set. The second one is a cast photo. Look, it's Helo in a suit. No sign of Amy, but since she's recurring I guess she doesn't get included. Seems the Dolls wear yoga clothing (and no shoes) when they're not out on jobs. ;-) Sadly, we won't see Dollhouse until January, but the episode count is now at 13. If you want to put a positive spin on it, the later date gives FOX, and fans, time to promote the series.

Well, at least it wasn't a Ferengi plot to fool the Doctor

A little ST: TNG reference for the fans there. ;-)

Well, that was... interesting. But in a good way.

Wow, what a way to ruin all the anticipation. Jenny's from a machine! She's not the Doctor's long lost daughter or unknown clone daughter created by some psycho. She's just a soldier. I suppose that's for the best. If she was somehow lost or Ten and Rose's daughter then that raises all sorts of problems. This way is clean and simple. Sample of DNA and here's Jenny. I have to say, Jenny grows on you. She was bred to be a soldier, but she's truly the Doctor's daughter. She found another way, to go against what she was made for. And she can be all excitable and giggly. I was totally convinced that once Jenny started to come around to the idea of travelling with her "dad" she was going to die. First, too many people in the TARDIS, and second, the Doctor would actually get to be happy for once. So, gun shot to the chest. That had echoes of the Master's death in "Last of the Time Lords". Naturally I was shouting at my screen, "Regenerate!" Seems kind of cheap it was a delayed reaction. Actually, Jenny didn't even regenerate, did she? She just had some wispy gas escape from her mouth and she woke up. It looked like the gas that escape from her mouth was the same as the terraforming gas. Did that initiate some chemical reaction? Whatever the case may be, there goes Jenny, flying around and seeing the universe. I do hope she and the Doctor meet up again. And if you can create more Time Lords from that machine, why doesn't the Doctor try to rebuild and repopulate a new Gallifrey? Obviously his DNA can only go so far, but it would be a start.

Poor Freema. First she gets dunked in goo green and now she falls into a pit of gross mud. What a great way to welcome her back. ;-) As is protocol when the Doctor has more than one companion, heck, even when he has one companion, everyone gets split up. I feel a bit cheated that Martha didn't get more of a chance to spend time with the Doctor. You lose the opportunity of the two of them talking about where they are. Just think of the awkward, but funny, conversations they could have had. Like, Martha could invite the Doctor to her wedding and he could become all rambling. The only thing that didn't make sense was Martha breaking down in tears outside after that Hath drowned. She isn't freaked out when the Hath take her away; she helps them. Plus, she's clearly capable of figuring things out herself; she goes outside instead of through the tunnels to get to the Source. Did she have a flashback to the year that wasn't? I could see that. Martha probably walked through some barren places on her own. I was kind of hoping we'd get to see Tom at the end of the episode. Maybe next time. Doesn't Freema still have a few more appearances to go?

And check out Donna, figuring stuff her own self. It might be only me, but every time she says, "I spent (so many years/months) at such-and-such job" I just grin. It's probably only me. :-) I worked temp too and you just have to pick up things quickly. That totally works for Donna as a character. She's wandered like the Doctor, going from place to place. She has all these odd experiences to pull from and it clearly comes in handy. But now I'm worried for Donna's well-being. The last time a companion said she would stay forever with the Doctor, it ended badly. Seems like they're not in the habit of killing people just because, so hopefully that means Donna won't meet an ill-fated end, but we all know staying forever with the Doctor is not an option. I don't see Donna just deciding to stop because travelling becomes too much. She'll either find a cause of her own, which most companions do, or... Well, if you follow tradition, the only other way to leave the TARDIS and the Doctor is to die a noble death. Though, deciding to leave because they had enough worked for Sarah Jane and Tegan.

I just hate it when they reveal plot stuff in the title. At least the Doctor's daughter thing wasn't a fake out. "Just kidding. She's really not your kid." I always like it when you become more invested in the character stuff than the actual plot. Two sides fighting a never ending war. Gotcha. Said war is only seven days old. Um, sure. So both sides have been cloning themselves so much that the originals are all gone? Wouldn't the quality of the DNA go down with each batch that is created? Not that I really care; I don't watch Who for the science. The Hath were kind of cute though. They sort of emote with their gills.

Would it be too radical to hope that Jenny might be the next companion? With next season the year off, it doesn't seem likely she would join the Doctor by the end of this season. Just having TV movies to expand on her character would feel cheap. It'd also be a different dynamic. Jenny wouldn't be like Susan; Susan knew about Gallifrey and the culture. Jenny has soldier training but no history. She would learn who she is with every adventure. And the Doctor could go through being a dad again. :-D

Sadly, I won't be home next Saturday so I'll be missing out on the Agatha Christie action. But my sister is going to buy me a pair of Chucks for my birthday. :-) Now comes the all important decision: what colour?

Okay, entry into the real world is on pause

Jeez, here I am, all ready to find a permanent job, and the employment agency comes through, but it's the employer who's being less than stellar. I've been waiting on an interview since last week, but to my surprise, the employer or whoever is handling the hiring process is away on vacation until tomorrow. It would have been nice to know that. Sigh. Sure, doing absolutely nothing has been nice, but I could be doing more productive things (and making some money).

At least the employment agency has been nice about it. They already have a temp job lined up for me if the permanent job falls through. It's with one of the companies I worked for last summer, the one where I got to read books when there wasn't anything for me to file. Actually, it's the exact same job. It's easy to believe that asked for me personally because I did such an awesome job, but really, they probably only want me back because I know the job and they won't have to train someone. It's been a year though; I really don't remember all the details of the job, except the parts where I got to do nothing and the free lunches.

The one plus: I didn't fail any of my classes! Marks were up surprisingly fast this year. I'm under the impression my Chinese prof curved the marks though. I don't think I did that well. So now I'm just waiting on the university to review my grades and approve me for convocation.

But in the mean time, vacation in one week! Does anyone know what the weather is like in San Francisco around this time of year?

I think this episode is saying we should all walk more

Good thing about two parters. If the first part is lacklustre you can always make it up in the second part. Though, first parts can't help but be sucky sometimes. It has to set up stuff for the second part and that's never fun.

The whole Sontaran plot was made better knowing the Sontarans weren't invading Earth. newnumber6 rightly pointed out that the Sontarans were never interested in Earth. All they cared about was winning the war against the Rutans (who got a mention; whoo old school Who). Turning the whole planet into a clone breeding farm? Eh. Sure, I'll buy that. You need soldiers to fight a war. Though why do the aliens always choose Earth? There must be other planets out there with a bigger population. Or maybe Earth is the only planet with cars and a greenhouse gas problem.

Hee, the Doctor gave Donna a TARDIS key. Funny how the moment kind of goes by without any fanfare. Here's your key Donna. Oh crap, the TARDIS got teleported. Obviously the Doctor and Donna needed to be split up for the plot. I just found it odd the Doctor would have Donna just sit in the TARDIS while the world is being poisoned. He could have easily said, "Go wait inside UNIT mobile command." But whatever. This gave Donna a chance to be, let's face it, awesome. She's running around the enemy's ship, facing possible death for the Doctor. I liked that he apologized for asking. It's not his intention to get his companions into situations where they could die. Plus now kids will be running around with mallets, pretending to hit Sontarans on the back of the neck. Clearly that mallet was set up at the beginning of the first part just so Donna could use it. ;-)

I was expecting the whole Martha!clone thing to be a bigger deal. Nope, the Doctor figures it out by smelling her. And all clone Martha did was hit a "no" button. Seems a bit silly for the Sontarans to clone people and to transfer memories but the whole system keeps the original alive. Not that I wanted Martha to die, but that's a huge weakness. Either way, it gave Martha a chance to have a chat with herself, though watching yourself die, that must be weird. At least Martha is sticking around for another episode. She really didn't have a chance to do much, except be covered in green goo.

Yay for Sylvia for taking that axe to the car window. I don't understand why the Doctor didn't use the sonic screwdriver to break the glass. We've seen him do that before. I suppose the low-tech approach is usually not the first thing the Doctor thinks of. But it also gave Sylvia a chance to be more than the criticizing mother. It seems a bit unfair that Donna decides not to tell her the truth. If Donna never came back, Sylvia would never know why. Though, on the other hand, you could argue Sylvia is better off. Ignorance is bliss and what not. I do hope we will see more of Donna's family in the future.

I don't know how smart it was for the Doctor to burn the gas out of the atmosphere. The burn over looked really close. Like, it just grazes the top of a building in New York City. Yes, it's a cool and interesting way to get rid of the gas, but if anyone was outside, like the thousands of people walking in the countryside, wouldn't they have been breathing super hot air? But what do I know. Though, since when do Sontarans breathe a different air? Donna and Luke were able to walk around the ship and breathe fine.

A few random things. Poor Ross. The moment they included him in the recap I knew he was going to die. The second you like a character they're immediately put in the cross hairs. The Brig got a mention! It was established on The Sarah Jane Adventures he was still alive, but this makes it even more canonical. Apparently he's a Sir? I'll have to listen to that again. Seems like he didn't retire, or maybe he went back into active duty. Cute when the Doctor said, "Are you my mommy?" And the Valiant got to make a cameo. I laughed at the end when the captain lady, I can't remember her name, kissed Colonel Mace. Yeah, that was slightly awkward. And as annoying as Luke was, as least he had a heroic end.

Okay, and the writers are being sneaky. I bet they sneaked Rose in knowing it would put the fandom in a frenzy. So it seemed like Rose was trying to get a message through. To warn the Doctor of something? She looked urgent. I mean, you wouldn't break down the walls between realities just to say hi.

I so planned on not watching the trailer since the plot of episode six was a complete mystery to me but with the end of the episode the way it was, I had to keep watching.

Who would have thought the title would actually give it away? ;-) I was optimistic that the title was just a mislead, but they rarely do subtle on Doctor Who, do they? The Doctor's daughter. Well, it's easy to believe, since the kid is blond and clearly not dead like the other Time Lords, that someone mixed the Doctor's DNA with Rose's DNA and, voilà, you have a half-human Time Lord. But would they really do that? Or will this be a fake-out? It's not really the Doctor's daughter. Hey, they've had that plot before on Star Trek: The Next Generation. But the Doctor's hand (which is still sitting there; I wonder if Donna has noticed the severed hand) seemed to be reacting to something. We'll see next week and just in time for Mother's Day.

Wow, I didn't expect to enter the real world that fast

So last exam ever today! :-D I'll be off soon to go write that then I'm free of university forever.

I had expected to ease into the whole permanent job thing. I'm going on vacation near the end of May so there's about three weeks there where I thought I would have a temp job. I was fine with that. A few weeks work, get some money for the vacation, then chilling in San Francisco. Suddenly the employment agency's on the phone and they're offering me a real job. Whoa! I totally wasn't expecting that.

It sounds easy enough. It's with an insurance agency for high risk people and I'd be proofreading and other admin things. But I totally did not know what to say to the agency lady. I was all, "Wah? I is not done skool yet." Thankfully she was nice enough and she said I could phone her back tomorrow with a decision. Wow. A real job and I didn't have to lift a finger. Okay, so no guarantees that I'll get the job. Still got to do an interview and such, but it's mostly there for the taking.

But first, must write last exam and totally not fail.

ETA: My sister made this for me. I'm beginning to suspect she doesn't do any work while at work.

Okay, on second thought "The Sontaran Stratagem" had its moments

I was rather tired yesterday after the con, so my thoughts on Doctor Who were a little scattered. I forgot to babble about a few things that came up. The episode had some good things.

- Martha's cell phone. The Doctor doesn't keep it with him? It looks like he had it sitting in a slot in the console. What if Martha had phoned while he and Donna were, I dunno, in Pompeii? Would Martha leave a message? "Hi, Doctor. Clearly you're off saving the day on some planet. Yeah, don't mind me. I'm just calling about a possible alien invasion on Earth. Phone me back when you get this message." It's not like the Doctor doesn't have room in his coat pockets.

- The shot where the Doctor's looking at Martha with the TARDIS and Donna behind him was nice. You've got the Doctor looking at the past companion, with future companion sort of out of view.

It's interesting that Donna seems to be kind of hesitant. She doesn't go running down the ramp. Or she's giving the Doctor and Martha a moment to say hello. Either way, I like it. That one shot says a lot.

- Old School Who call signs! Greyhound # and Trap #. This episode may have not wowed me, but their attention to continuity I loved. The Doctor even gets in a joke about the UNIT dating controversy. It's odd that they mention the U.N. even though the United Nations asked that they not associate UNIT with them. I guess they just can't say "United Nations Intelligence Taskforce".

- Donna, Super Temp! The military is running around this warehouse, detaining people and being this big show of force. I like that Donna wasn't overwhelmed by this and didn't get totally lost. Instead, she checks out the office. Having worked temp myself, I get that she would pick up on things that would be missing in a typical office. If you have a new workplace every other week, you have to find similarities to get you through.

- Medusa Cascade mention. Again. That's twice now this season. Seems it's a kind of thing with broken moons. I hope all these repeated references start making sense at some point. I mean, it's nice they went for a change this season; repeated references over a watch word. Watch words can be slightly annoying if they're everywhere, but now that they keep mentioning things over and over it's easy to start over analyzing things.

- I found it slightly funny that they needed an excuse for the Doctor to be in a car. Nope, sorry, can't use the TARDIS this week, got to take a jeep. Ross was a fun side companion, though. He reminded me of Benton, from old school UNIT. Steadfast but sort of nonchalant when aliens start showing up.

- Poor, gooey Freema. After watching the Confidential, the clone Martha plot actually is kind of clever. Clone Martha is the Martha that could have been if she totally went military. Uncaring, cold. I assume we'll see more of this next episode.

- I'm sure all the fans were asking, "Why doesn't Donna smash the car window!?" Hopefully Sylvia went inside to fetch something heavy to do just that.

- I'm fond of silhouettes so that last shot of the Doctor sort of lost in the mist was a nice parting shot.

It's sort of like he's overwhelmed by the problem at hand. Though I think it would have cooler if there had been more cars on the street spewing gas to make it feel more ominous.

I think that's the last time I'll be watching Doctor Who after a long day. You sort of zone out.

Oh, those silly Sontarans

Again with the titles that spoil who the villains are. It totally ruins the moment when they're revealed. You know to expect a space potato head under that helmet.

And ha, they actually called a Sontaran a potato! Oh, that was wonderful. A space potato in a blue and grey rubber suit. A rubber suit with fake abs and a tight... backside. Seriously, what happened to the black armour? I totally think the Judoon stole the Sontarans' look. Black leather and vaguely Roman. That should have been the Sontarans' new look. No, instead we get this. I appreciate they kept the same basic design. Big helmet to accommodate the big head and the probic vent in the back. At least they remembered the probic vent. Extreme love for how the Doctor distracted Staal with a racquet ball. Hee. I get that Sontarans are supposed to be these big (small?) tough warriors, but somehow they don't come off as very threatening, no matter how hard you try. Seemed like at the end they were going for a Māori warrior type vibe, but it still doesn't work for me. Sontarans were fun when they popped up occasionally, but they were never that scary.

But enough about the potato heads. Martha! Feels like this episode is set after "Reset". People were speculating that Martha might have been engaged but I didn't think they would actually do it. How much time has gone by? Martha mentioned her boyfriend in "Reset" and now it's finance. And it's Tom. That was a nice reveal. The relationship seems rushed somehow, but it's easy to forget the whole missing year and how Tom sacrificed himself to save Martha. I wish we had gotten to spend more time with Martha in this episode. At least she had a scene with Donna about the Doctor. And no fighting. That was good. Fighting companions would feel lame. I wonder if we'll see Tom when Martha shows up again.

How cute was the Doctor teaching Donna how to fly the TARDIS? He's never let anyone else fly the TARDIS before. I'm not sure if that means something. But you do get a sense of how Donna has grown on him. "She looks after me." Aw. Poor Doctor, with his foot in his mouth, when Donna says she wants to go home. I've always liked how the companion's family is never forgotten. They always go back and visit them. The little clip show when Donna is walking down the street was really lame, like they were short and needed to fill time or something. Donna explaining things to her granddad made up for that. Donna needs to tell her mother at some point though. Funny how everyone already knows the Doctor, Wilf from Christmas, and Sylvia from Donna's wedding. I wonder if they'll mention the fate of Donna's dad.

Overall though, this two parter is a lot like last year's two parter: kind of disappointing. Well, plot wise anyway. Sontarans using cars and gas to do something. Hopefully that something is interesting and exciting when it's revealed. But those sneaky people at Doctor Who. You can see an Atmos sticker on the cab in "Partners in Crime". They never overlook anything, do they? :-) The effects people also get bonus points for keeping the ball shape of the Sontaran scout ships. Yay, old school!

Actually, I'm really excited to get past the next episode. I have no idea what episode six is about. They didn't show clips from that episode; all the trailers skipped over it and went straight to episode seven. Beyond episode seven I'm totally clueless, too. I can't wait. No more school and unknown Who episodes to come.

Geek out weekend!

The annual comic book convention is this weekend. As some of you might recall, I went last year and met Morena and Christina. I was on the fence about going again, but the con people have fixed things up this year so hopefully it's a lot better. There's no one Whedonverse related this year, well, Jo Chen and another artist who did covers for the first Serenity comic, but Six and Sulu are coming. Tricia Helfer should be interesting since she is Albertan and could probably locate Calgary on a map if prompted. I always think that the guests who come to Calgary probably have no idea where they are and are only coming to make some money. ;-) And George Takei should also be exciting. He's exciting enough that my mother's coming, too. Yes, geekery runs in the family. I'm tempted to ask him for an autograph but ask him if he could sign it to Melllvar and not to my name, just to see if he remembers the joke from Futurama ("I think I've been to enough conventions to know how to spell Melllvar."). Too geeky? Too weird?

At the very least, it'll be a nice break from studying. I've been writing so much I get a hand cramp by the afternoon. Of course, this is the weekend that transit decides it needs to do some maintenance on the tracks. Getting to the grounds won't be as easy now. Doesn't city transit realize all the geeks in the city need to get downtown this weekend?

I'll actually have to put off watching Doctor Who for a few hours. Strangely, I'm not too worried. Every time I see the new costumes for the Sontarans, I feel less inclined to like the episode. Grey and blue rubber suits aren't threatening! Sigh.

Stargate: Continuum; is it July yet?

Had an exam yesterday so I didn't get a chance to see this until now.<lj-embed id="3" />
Wow. It looks like Stargate: Continuum will be even better than Ark of Truth. Because now the writers aren't stuck tying up a plot. They can go crazy! And go crazy they did, if this trailer is any indication. I can't wait to see this. Jack's back and it seems like he's actually involved in doing stuff this time; no sitting around for him. :-)

Ooddles of Ood

Just what I needed. A snowy episode to match the weather outside. ;-) I swear the Ood Home Sphere could be just outside my window.

Fun to see the Ood again. In a nice nod to Classic Who, the Ood-Sphere is in the same solar system as the Sense-Sphere, home to the Sensorites. Didn't someone comment in season two how the Ood resembled the Sensorites? I just love it when stuff gets all tied together. And oh boy, a snow planet. It's not often they go to another planet and it doesn't look like a rock quarry. It's always nice when they change things up. Though, they were filming in August, poor crew. But it looked believable enough.

I liked the idea of the episode, but the execution felt sort of off. We really didn't question how the Ood were treated back in "The Impossible Planet" so that gets expanded upon here. Friends of the Ood was even mentioned back in TIP, in a short bit of dialogue. It seems clear everyone just takes the Ood for granted. No one questions where they come from or why they would want to be so subservient. I could have done without the giant Ood brain, though. Reminds me of a Futurama episode. And brains in hands. Actually, maybe they could have gone without the whole exterior brain thing. The captain guy was needlessly aggressive, too.

The psychic song was a nice touch, though. Donna asks to hear it even if she doesn't need to. She can already see that the Ood are suffering. It's too bad they didn't expand on how it affected the Doctor. He says, "ooh, my head" at one point, but it must have been worst than that for him. It's odd (Ood?) that the Doctor didn't pick up on any of the Ood's telepathy in TIP/TSP. Maybe it's because he was closer to the giant Ood brain and all the Ood signals here.

Okay, I do not understand the Doctor's fashion sense. When he's wearing the brown suit, it's fine. He mixes up shirt colours and changes ties. I do enjoy the casual look, with just a dress shirt and a t-shirt underneath. But when he's in the blue suit, it's like he's dressing in the dark. I don't mind the colour, but come on Doctor, the collar of your shirt goes under the collar of the suit jacket. I just hate it when he does that. Lapels don't go on the outside. It makes him look like, I dunno, a pimp or something. I'm surprised Donna didn't comment. "You changed suits! Why is your shirt like that?" But look at Donna, all glammed up. Though poor girl was stuck under a parka for the whole episode.

And why with the more cryptic messages? The Doctor's song will end soon? I know David can't play the Doctor forever but you don't have hype it up and make it an ominous thing. Unless Sigma Ood meant something else, but I don't see how you could interpret it in another way. Unless Sigma Ood meant the Doctor's song of lament would be over soon. Yes, that's a really far stretch to relate it to Rose, but I'd rather consider that then believe it's a sign that the Doctor will soon be facing regeneration.

Next week should be interesting. I'm not sure I agree with the makeover they've given the Sontarans, but hopefully they've kept their attitudes the same.

Canada has two seasons. Winter and construction.

Hmm, maybe I shouldn't have laughed at the weather. The city's under a weather warning now. Heavy snowfall. There's a good 25-30 cm outside on the ground. And a chunk of snow just fell off the roof with a loud thunk. Ah, spring in Calgary.

Even the birds are fed up. They flew back here from the south, expecting nice weather to have cute baby birds and then pow!

This is my neighbour's tree. Usually there are a lot of birds hanging around - crows, magpies, etc - because the lady across the way feeds them, but this is just plain weird. It's like The Birds around here. I couldn't get a picture since they flew away, but there were tons more sitting on my fence and the lilac bush. The poor birds were all huddled together and puffed up to keep warm.

I hope the weather lets up before Monday. Being late for exams would not be a wise move.

Countdown to entering the real world begins

Whoo, last day of classes! I will never ever have to take another Chinese class again or haul myself out of bed for a 40 minute train ride to the universe. Now I have the real world to look forward to. Oh boy.

As is the tradition here, the last day of classes is Bermuda Shorts Day. Wear your shorts and get horribly drunk before noon. I actually saw people drinking beer before 10:00 this morning. But the joke's on them. It was only zero degrees Celsius when I got to the university and it was snowing by the time I finished my last Chinese class (11:00 am or so). I've never been one for drinking so I can only laugh at how everyone had to scurry and move the beer gardens inside.

Just two exams and I am officially done university forever. It's kind of scary and great at the same time. In university all your time is spent worrying about work and getting that one essay done before it's due. At the same time you had entire summers to just slack off if need be. Now I have to find a job and that's eight hours of solid work every day. Only advantage of that is you leave the work at the office and when you get home you can do anything. No homework to worry about. The weekends are your own, too. I'll be happy to have more time to write but we'll see how I last with a 9-5 job.

And I am so close to finishing off the last essay I'll ever have to write. I'm tempted to have a note burning once I'm completely graduated. I've always wanted to do that.

Quick thoughts about Serenity: Better Days #2

I've gotten a little behind on my comic thoughts. I blame school. But it's the last week. Hooray!

The only thing that annoys me about the Firefly comics is how they have to squeeze in this big story in just three issues. Since it's likely Dark Horse will keep releasing these comics, this is the only chance Browncoats will have to see any developments with the characters. And three issues just isn't enough. You have to service the story and please the fans with new content at the same time. It leaves me with the feeling of wanting more. Actually, that's probably the whole plan. Leave the fans wanting more. :-)

The best part about this issue was seeing how the crew would spend their share of the money. The best vision of the future, because it's poignant and completely impossible to ever see in the future, has to be Wash's. It's so simple; him, Zoe, and their child. I like to think this proves this story is set after "Heart of Gold" because Wash was so against the idea of having a family at that time. Clearly Zoe's argument convinced him maybe raising a kid on a ship isn't so bad after all. Of course, we'll never ever get to see this. Second place for best vision of the future has to be Book's. Whoo, hookers and blow. ;-) The "blink blink" sound effect by Wash's head made me laugh, mainly because that would be Wash's reaction but how the heck do you show that in comic book form? I do believe Book when he says he's kidding, but the fact that he can so aptly describe such a scene just fuels the theory that he was a crook or some such before becoming a preacher.

The others' were all right. We got to learn the name of Jayne's mother: Radiant. Hmm, I can see how Jayne ended up with such an odd name. ;-) Kaylee's was sweet, wanting to set up a parts shop for her dad. I don't know if it was supposed to be a joke, but I laughed when I noticed all the shelves Kaylee was riding past in that one panel were compression coils. I guess Kaylee never wants to be caught with a bad compression coil again. Interesting that in Simon's he sees River working with him, like he expects her to enter medicine as well. And River's... Well, that's River for you.

This whole Dust Devil thing seems a little weird. Too much stuff going on. Is Inara so put off by the idea that Mal might be a Dust Devil that she's willing to hand him over? I doubt that's the case. And was that Simon leaving Inara's shuttle at the end of the issue? I can see Mal and the others buying off people or something because the crew clearly didn't have any money by the time of the movie. Unless they spent it all upgrading the ship.

I wonder why Dark Horse doesn't make Firefly into an actual comic series. I think there's enough demand out there; just look at how well Buffy Season Eight is doing. Or maybe they're just saving all the really good stories for a sequel. :-D

Doctor Who: making Roman history fun since 2008!

Wow, that was a really good episode. I was rather excited for this one since I learned a little bit about Pompeii in my Greek and Roman technology class. Also, it's easy to convince myself that by watching this episode I was actually studying for the class. ;-) Actually, there were a few examples of some of things I learned in class in the episode, like amphorae and hypocausts. Heck, there was even graffiti on the wall when the Doctor is talking to that merchant.

It's been a long time since Doctor Who has done a vaguely educational historical episode. Seems they used to do them all the time back in the day. Kids could learn about history as they watch the show. Though, this one has more similarities to an episode like "The Time Meddler" than something like "The Romans"; a historical setting but with aliens thrown in. I like it this way. The writer has the challenge of working around actual events. I didn't realize this before the episode, but the Caecilius family is based on a real family whose house still stands in the ruins of Pompeii. Stuff like that just makes the geek in me happy. The Doctor's statement about how everyone in the future will remember Pompeii was such a great line.

But enough about history. How great is Donna? This is the first time in the new series that the Doctor has visited a huge past event that can't be changed, but it doesn't matter to Donna. She's presented with a chance to save the lives of 20 000 people and she'll take it. It really put her at odds with the Doctor. I don't think we've really since the Companion go so completely against the Doctor. I think that's what I like most about Donna; she will voice her opinion and stick with it. At the same time, she'll support you all the way. The Doctor doesn't have to choose to destroy Pompeii on his own. Donna pushes the lever with him. I like that the Doctor acknowledges that he does need someone, echoing what Donna said back in "The Runaway Bride".

Some of the stuff with the rock aliens went by kind of quickly and the pacing in the scenes with the Doctor and Donna running around inside Vesuvius felt kind of off as well. I suppose you really just want to get the point where the Doctor realizes he's the reason Mount Vesuvius explodes. There seems to be a theme going on, with planets disappearing. Last week it was mentioned the Adipose breeding planet was lost and this week the Pyroviles' planet is said to have been "taken". It something being set up here? Is it related to Rose somehow? Like, is the method she's using to travel across realities doing something to the universe. I wouldn't be surprised if that's the case. Because if Rose returns, there has to be consequences.

And whoo, soothsayers! Time to get your prophecy on. I just love it when people who can see the future pop up in TV shows. We get hints of stuff but they're out of context so it doesn't make that much sense. It was slightly eerie when Stone Arm Guy and Prophecy Girl (sorry, Roman names are hard to remember) both start spouting off all sorts of stuff about the Doctor and Donna. They got into his head and that doesn't happen too often. But what did they mean when they said to Donna, "There is something on your back." It was paired with the statement said to the Doctor "She is returning." Clearly, duh, they're talking about Rose, so I assume that bit of soothsaying is talking about something near the end of the series. Is this a reference to doubts Donna has? Or something more along the lines of "You've got a monkey on your back"? Time will tell.

Good episode, and we all learned a few things about Pompeii. Maybe a question about Pompeii will appear on my Greek and Roman technology final. I wish. :-) Thankfully in a week classes will be done and I can watch Doctor Who guilt free after that.

The Doctor and Donna: together again!

Oh yeah, Doctor Who is back! I think I've overgeeked this weekend. :-D

Okay, bizarre plot involving fat babies, but cute fat babies! Okay, fine, also a commentary on how the world is full of people looking for quick diet plans and stuff. Anyone else wondering what the hell Russell T Davies was smoking when he came up with this plot? As always, I preferred the non-plot stuff; good stuff with Donna and seeing how she's lived her life since that Christmas. It's always easy to assume she went out into the world and lived her life, but she didn't. She just started to wander and that's so easy to relate to. The scene with her mom nagging her about finding a job was like a scene out of my life. ;-) I like that she went out and tried to find the Doctor rather than waiting for him to come back. She's grown as a character since we last saw her; I expected Donna to be annoying but actually, she genuinely wants to get out there and that's the best kind of Companion. She's not going to be complaining about everything they run into. And how great is Wilf, Donna's grandfather. He's the crazy guy from the newsstand in "Voyage of the Damned"! It was so cute how Donna asked the Doctor to fly the TARDIS over the hill.

And poor lonely Doctor! The scene where he starts babbling tech only to realize there's no one there to take in his awesomeness was quite sad. I bet he started talking to himself during the time he was travelling by himself. It's interesting that he says he ruined Martha's life. I assume he doesn't mean her family life; her parents got back together after the fiasco with the Master. I guess he means how he totally ignored her. I suppose him getting Martha a job with UNIT is his way of making up for some stuff. "I just want a mate." Aw. I like how he tries to warn Donna that travelling with him isn't all that grand sometimes. Funny how Donna just assumed the offer to join him was still good. :-) Offers to join the Doctor don't expire?

Okay, I've avoided it long enough. I wasn't expecting that ending. OMG! LOOK AT ALL THE LUGGAGE DONNA PACKED! No, wait...

Rose!

The second you see the back of her head you know it's her. Was the ending leaked on the internet? I know I wasn't expecting it. So either Rose has found a way back or she found some technology that projects her into this reality. She's clearly not invisible, but she just fades away. If this Rose is somehow a fake, like a memory or something, I'll be disappointed. Does this mean Rose is the watch word for this season? Either way, good tease for the fans. And "Doomsday" music! Just in case you forgot how heart wrenching the scene on the beach was. ;-)

Slightly odd start to the season, but I've missed Who. I didn't realize Donna was shorter than the Doctor. I thought they were the same height. Is David Tennant freakishly tall or something and I've never noticed? And next week looks exciting. I learned about Pompeii in my Greek and Roman Ancient Technology class.

Wow, and the official Doctor Who site got ugly and weird to navigate. But podcast commentaries! Hurray for BBC only messing up the commentary for "Voyage of the Damned". But the quality of the video are better.

Yay, Battlestar Galactica is back!

So, how come after a year away, the premiere for season four of Battlestar Galactica is only one hour? I think we deserve two hours, thank you very much.

I'm just going to admit this upfront: I've never been overly fond of Kara. She's a fine character, but I'm not prone to bouts of "OMG! Starbuck!" when she's on screen. It feels silly that they played up her death; it seemed so obvious that she would be back. You don't kill off super popular characters unless you're stupid (or mean). I do find it interesting that she's at odds with everyone. Earth is over here but the fleet is going this way. I hope they explain why and how Kara knows they're going the wrong way and no weird, flighty answers like "She's special" or something. You need a better reason than that. Also, Kara doesn't mention when she's orbiting Earth, seeing any satellites. If it were modern day Earth, there would be satellites. So either Earth is still inhabited by dinosaurs or, if they're lucky, people who have yet to invent high-tech technology. Or Earth is inhabited by a super advance race of humans that they don't need technology. ;-) As long as they don't do Galactica 1980 when they get to Earth, I'll be fine.

I guess they're taking their time with the plot of the secret Cylons. Ron Moore has stated they're "special" Cylons and I really hope "special" translates into something cool. So was Anders triggered? I thought he might have been uploaded with a program he would spread to the other three. If the four of them start doing weird things I guess we'll know. :-) Seems a bit amazing that the Cylons only managed to take out one ship in the entire fleet and it was only really a mistake. A raider blew up and hit the ship. It looks like they didn't bother to remind us the viewer of Laura's dizzy moment just as the fleet jumped into the nebula last episode. Her dizzy spell is oddly similar to Kara's dizzy moment whenever the fleet jumps away from Earth. A connection? Would give the two of them something to discuss instead of shooting each other.

Yeah, and pulling a gun on Laura is totally going to stop the fleet from jumping. Likely Adama's going to throw her into the brig after this. And does anyone else find it funny that Lee takes the time to ask Adama, "So, is Roslin still staying in your quarters?" Considering that scene was all about Kara's return and how Lee doesn't question why, that line really sticks out. Is it just there to tell us Laura is going to be in Adama's quarters so when Kara is looking for her we can all shout at the screen, "She's in Adama's quarters!" Or was that just me? :-D

And Baltar finally cut his hair! My god, his hair hasn't been that short since the miniseries. He looks less like Jesus now and he's got his crazy harem of worshipers. I'm just waiting for the moment he starts to believe he really is a messiah or something. He's wearing a ridiculous robe in the promo pictures.

Now I'm just waiting on Ron Moore's podcast commentary to appear. I really enjoy those. Those and David Eick's video blog. I just love how everyone just plays along and says bad things about David Eick. :-)

Buffy #13: some general thoughts

Reading Drew Goddard's arc has made me realize just how much I miss watching Buffy. His snappy dialogue just brings it all back. But one advantage the comics have over the show: you can go anywhere you want and bring back any character you want (without having to pay the actor).

I mentioned Drew's story "Antique" from Tales of the Vampires last time and reading it over, it sort of jives with what Andrew says about Xander and Dracula. I had always assumed Xander had faithfully followed Buffy after Sunnydale, locating Slayers around the world and so on, but it turns out he went away for a few months to deal with Anya's death. In Drew's other story Xander was acting as Dracula's manservant, and wearing manservant breeches, but the dialogue implies Xander was there against his will. According to Andrew, Xander went to Dracula on his own. Seems like an odd choice. It's even revealed Xander and Dracula kept in touch after "Buffy vs Dracula". Maybe Xander went to Dracula initially just to hang out and Dracula put him under his "thrall". Though Xander teaching Dracula how to ride a motorbike is consistent. :-) Whatever the case may be, you get some great scenes between Xander, Dracula, and Renee. It's hard to tell whether Xander is being genuinely nice to Dracula or it's just Dracula's magick. I do think Dracula "lived" a little when Xander was around and was saddened to see him go. Though seeing Xander in his manservant costume is priceless.

I'm curious as to why Joss decided to bring back Dracula or was that Drew's decision? At the moment he doesn't seem to add much to the overall arc of the comics. I guess he could come back later in the season. If he's there to contrast against Buffy, I can see that. Dracula has a great bit of dialogue with Buffy in "Antique" about growing old and losing respect. If these Japanese vampires have the power to deactivate girls then there's going to be panic and the girls might question Buffy's leadership. Drew certainly seems to be setting up Buffy's role as leader as a stumbling block. Willow explains the problems to Satsu and we have Buffy ordering Satsu sort of gruffly. There are rogue Slayers out there and it's possible some of the girls might join them.

Andrew continues to amuse. I want to know why he was carrying the Love at First Bite costume with him, because I doubt that was lying around at the castle. I'm still not sure what his role is within the group. He gives lectures to the girls and looks after a contingent. Actually, how the Slayers are organized is kind of unclear as well. I get they have different squads all over the place, but who trains them? The Slayers were who present at the battle with the First? When Buffy is told Aiko found the Japanese vampires, she is is told Aiko is "one of ours". So the girls, who can leave home I assume, train under Buffy and then they get assignments? What about that squad Giles was talking to back in #2? Or does he just travel from squad to squad lecturing the girls on their heritage and that's it? Ooh, so many questions.

But my thoughts have strayed. Willow asking Satsu what Buffy is like in bed made me laugh. Does that mean Willow has thought about Buffy in a non-best friend capacity? There's also one lovely panel of Willow just smiling at Satsu. Georges Jeanty's art hasn't really wowed me, but occasionally there are some shots that was very pretty.

I'm really interested in seeing where this arc leads. If Slayers can lose their powers, is it a permanent thing? By Fray's time, there doesn't seem to be other Slayers. Maybe that'll be answered in the next arc...

Fan fic memeage

This meme is courtesy of sl_podcast. Seems all I do lately are memes. ;-)

1. How about a brief introduction?
locker_monster. Horribly obsessed with various fandoms.

2. What got you into fan fiction (and/or adopting muses)?
Joss Whedon. It was about season two or season three of Buffy that I started writing fan fic about the show. I had been somewhat interested in writing before then, something my English teacher in junior high had tried to encourage with me, but it was Buffy that made me want to write more.

3. What kind of fan fiction do you write?
Anything my loopy brain comes up with when I'm thinking about other things (like school).

4. Do you write for the same pairings/characters?
I always try to write different characters, but I always find myself going back to the things I like and I'm familiar with. If there's an idea I really must get down and I'll write it, unfamiliarity be damned.

5. What is your most popular fic/muse and why do you think people like it so?
Hmm, I don't think I have a popular fic. I rarely manage to finish fics so I post very little. People seemed to like "A Different Kind of Companion" for the crossover aspect. Characters who've never met before got to reflect on each other's respective relationships.

6. Forget other people, what is the fanfic/post/prompt you've written that you're most proud of?
I'm actually proud of "A Different Kind of Companion". It was my first crossover fic and my first time writing for Doctor Who. Contrasting Mal/Inara and Ten/Rose was a lot of fun and making the two universes fit together was a nice challenge.

7. Do you find writing easy? Hard? What aspects do you struggle with?
Depends on the day. If I get a heck of an idea then it's easy for me to start, but as time goes on I just find what I'm writing utter crap and then I just give up. I find dialogue easy to write but filling in the stuff around it is hard; saying where people are, how they're moving or reacting, what a place looks like, etc.

8. Write a few sentences of your favorite pairing or character.
I have to do what now? Jeez, I can't think of anything. Okay, I officially suck.

9. Are there any fan fiction trends/clichés you hate?
Hmm... I'm not overly fond of baby fics, though if it's done right then I'll read it. Do fan fics have trends?

10. Are you guilty of any of the trends you hate?
Not that I'm aware of. I think someone needs to point out some fic trends to me.

11. What was the first fandom you wrote for? Do you still write for it?
Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Occasionally. I'm busy with school at the moment, plus there's the whole "never manage to finish writing anything" thing that always hits me.

12. Name your OTPs and explain what it is about them you love to write.
I don't think I've ever used "OTP" to describe a pairing I like. I like Doctor/Rose as a pairing; they helped each other as people, especially in the beginning. Rose found a better way to live and the Doctor dealt with his grief from the Time War. Then they became super attached to each other only to be horribly separated. Mal/Inara because they have so much angst and issues to work through before they can actually get together. I also like Jack/Rose/Doctor but I don't write them as much as I would like.

13. What would you call your writing style?
Under described, if that makes sense. I'm not in the habit of describing things, or if I do, describing them well. I'll just give you a basic description; nothing flowery or new. I also don't delve deep into character's thought process. I think I would be better off writing plays or scripts because you don't have to worry about describing how a person feels; you get that from the dialogue.

15. Name one thing you'd love to write but have been too afraid or too shy to do.
A huge, long, epic multi-chapter story (that doesn't suck). The longest thing I've written to date was 20 chapters. I'd love to tackle something with scope, but I don't have the time and yet again, I always run out of steam and abandon the story.

16. Do you feel uncomfortable taking criticism? Or worse, do you have the dreaded bloated ego?
I always get anxious when I post something. I always think no one will read it, so I'm always happy to see that someone has left a comment. I like to see what people think and how they interpret a story.

17. When you write, is there anything that helps?
If I'm reading something, I think that helps. Stimulates the creative juices. Right now I'm so uninspired because all I'm reading is boring history books. Also, new content from a fandom is good, too. I'm sure when Doctor Who comes back I'll be hit with story ideas, and just in time for the busiest part of my life: exams.

18. What inspires you?
Like I just said, new content. I also get weird ideas when watching TV. It's likely I'm ripping stuff off from other TV shows when that happens.

19. Lastly, how would you sum up your fan fiction/RP experiences and you as a writer?
It's been fun. Writing fan fic has let me meet new people. It also gives me something to work at.

Wow, Buffy #16 is going to rock!

I really shouldn't check the internet before I leave for the university. But check it out: preview pages for Buffy #16. :-D

Buffy/Fray crossover!

Man, Fray was the best Joss comic by far. Yeah, it was horribly delayed, but it put a new spin on the Buffyverse. And for those of us who kept up with it we were introduced to the scythe long before it became important. Plus it was set in the future, so it was practically a glimpse into the world of Firefly. I do believe the use of the word "rut" to mean f**k appeared in Fray, not Firefly (but don't quote me on that; it's been awhile since I've read Fray).

Also making this arc awesome: the return of Karl Moline, original Fray artist. When I saw the cover I was afraid someone else would be drawing Fray and that wouldn't look right. But the preview pages clearly show that isn't the case. And look at Joss, recreating the first page of Fray with Buffy. :-D So I guess Fray is officially officially canon.

Hopefully we'll find out what Fray has been up to since her miniseries, if Joss is kind. Though, he'll have to introduce Fray to the reading audience since not everyone will be familiar with her. Well, maybe we'll get a few hints.

'Kay, have to catch the bus now...

Stargate meme

Snagged from kefira.

1. Who is your favorite SG-1 character?
I'd have to say Jack, I guess. I like the team together as a whole but they don't count as one character. :-)

2. Who is your favorite Atlantis character?
Again, I like the entire ensemble, but if I have to narrow it down, probably Elizabeth. Or John. Or Carson (See, I suck at choosing).

3. What is your favorite SG-1 episode?
Any episode with time travel and/or alternative realities. Wait, that's my favourite kind of episode...

4. Who is your favorite villain? (in SG-1)
Ba'al, because a) you can crack all kinds of jokes with his name and b) Cliff Simon has a sexy accent. ;-)

5. Who is your favourite villain? (in Atlantis)
Michael, because he keeps coming back.

6. P-90 or Zat?
I don't know, but there's something really cool about a P-90. Especially when Teal'c is two fisting them.

7. You'll be...Jaffa or Tok'ra?
*shrug* Maybe a Tok'ra.

8. Goa'uld mother ship or X-303?
X-303. They have laser beams now.

9. Ori or Ancient?
Ancient.

10. Who is the best O'Neill.. Kurt Russell or Richard Dean Anderson?
RDA. Who doesn't love him.

11. The best Daniel Jackson...James Spader or Michael Shanks?
Michael Shanks. Gotta go with the Canadian.

12. Asgard or Replicator?
Asgard, because they're cute. And funny when they need to be. Too bad they're all dead.

13. Who is the best leader of Atlantis, Weir or Carter?
Elizabeth. Not because I'm bias but because Carter just wasn't Carter when she was running the city.

14. Who is best leader of the SGC...Hammond, O'Neill, Weir or Landry?
I miss Hammond, but Landry seems to have more character moments because of the father/daughter thing with Dr. Lam.

15. Jonas Quinn or Vala Mal Doran?
I like Vala. She and Daniel play off each other very nicely.

16. Col. Mitchell or Dr. Fraiser?
Cam is cute, but I miss Janet. Too bad she's only been back once. More alternative realities please.

17. Who would you kill first... Apophis, Ba'al, Cronos, Hathor, Yu or Anubis?
Hathor, because she only came back once after the first time they killed her. ;-)

18. Keller or Beckett?
Carson, but I can see why they hired Jewel Staite to play. You just can't hate her.

19. In a 1 on 1 fight, who would win... Teal'c or Ronon?
Hmm, I suppose both of them would be noble enough not to cheat. Maybe Teal'c. He has more experience.

20. What is your favourite Atlantis episode?
Again with the choosing. I really like "The Storm"/"The Eye". Let's just go with that.

21. Carter or McKay?
Rodney, because he's Canadian. :-D

22. Dr. Bill Lee or Radek Zelenka?
Ooh... If you really think about it, they fulfill the same role. The other smart character who supports the main smart character; good for a laugh but they never really get to be the smart one. But I think I'll have to say Bill on this one.

23. Stargate the movie (1994) or The Ark Of Truth?
Ark of Truth.

24. Major Lorne or Major Davis?
Lorne.

25 and finally, SG-1 or Atlantis?
I'm going to be lame and say both.

Icon meme!

# Reply to this post, and I will pick six of your icons.

# Make a post (including the meme info) and talk about the icons I chose.

# Other people can then comment to you and make their own posts.

# This will create a never-ending cycle of icon squee. Whoo!

kefira chose these six for me.

Canada created by moira_fae11 based on the Threadless t-shirt: I love Threadless shirts. I almost have enough that I could wear only Threadless shirts for a week. Sadly, I don't own this one since it's quite popular, but the text is damn funny. And after taking numerous Canadian Studies classes, it feels totally true to me. ;-)

Hypnotoad! created by lezopez: All glory to the Hypnotoad! It's too bad icons don't have sounds, because that's half the fun of Hypnotoad, but thank goodness for YouTube.

<lj-embed id="2" />
The sound of his hypnosis just cracks me up. Apparently it's the sound of jet engines played backwards or something. It's stuff like this that makes Futurama an awesome cartoon. It has totally random things and the fans just latch onto it.

Scooby Gang: I made this one when I realized I didn't have any Buffy icons of the gang. It's nothing special, I whipped it up in a few minutes, but it's the last image of the gang from the show so it'll always stick with me.

Jayne hat: Any good Canadian will recognize the text on this icon. Or any good beer drinkers I suppose. For the unfamiliar, it's from a Molson's commercial; basically it's this Canadian guy ranting about the things that make Canada different. It was all the rage for quite some time. As a Canadian, I've always found it hard to believe that hats like these aren't called toques in the rest of the world. You get silly things like wool hat or beanies. Since Jayne's cunning hat is definitely a toque, I just had to put the text with the image. I like to use this icon for ranting about stuff, usually T.V. since Adam looks so enraged. :-)

Ten Years: This is the first multi-frame icon I ever made. It's nothing exciting, but as a first effort it's not too bad. I made it last year for the tenth anniversary of Buffy's series premiere. Buffy was really the first show I latched onto fiercely because I liked it, not because my family watched it. The show also got me into writing and started my long obsession with anything Joss Whedon related. It's eleven years now and I bet I'll be a fan still another eleven years down the road.

Angry Robot Devil created by innermoppet: Another Futurama one. The dialogue just makes me laugh mainly because I'm a writer and it is really annoying when people have their characters just declare their feelings. Since it's Futurama, they have some fun with it and that just makes it more hilarious.

Firefly and Doctor Who: too much awesome in one place

So goldy_dollar mentioned an interest in doing a Doctor Who/Firefly ficathon. It's not official yet, but I thought I would whip up some images of the Serenity crew with the Doctor and Rose/Martha anyway. :-D

Currently 800x600 for no apparent reason. I can blow up the images to 1024x768 if anyone so desires.

Texture courtesy of stock.xchng.
